Description
Auction is for the 1969 vintage S.M.C. (Seattle Manufacturing Co.) oval aluminum carabiner & brake bar in the photos. I purchased it in 1969, used it for the next 4 years, then replaced it with an early Figure 8 rappel device. The "brake bars" were quite popular for a rappel device for a few years, but were soon considered too dangerous (I agree) & were replaced either by multiple oval carabiner rappel brakes, or the more simple & safe Figure 8 rappel devices. All types were hopefully used with a locking carabiner, which attached to a climbing harness & the rappel device.A Great item from the "golden-age" of American climbing for your collection, research, or museum. Please don't use it for rappelling!
