Description
Auction is for the carabiner in the first three photos.  It is a rare 2100 KG transitional carabiner, between Chouinard's 1974 - 76 D carabiner & a new 2200 KG D carabiner introduced in 1978.   This carabiner is pretty much identical to Chouinard's 1975 D, except for the different strength.   The 2100 KG D never shows up in a Chouinard catalog, although the D shown in Chouinard's catalog photo for the 1978 D, is this style.  The D that followed this one was marked 2200 KG & had a lower nose that fit through crowded bolt & piton eyes more readily.  The paper slip shown is included.  It shows what is embossed on the carabiner in bold letters & then name, & production dates.Photos 4 & 5 are of the cover of the 1975 -76 Chouinard Great Pacific Iron Works catalog & the D carabiner page.  The last 2 photos are of the cover of Chouinard's GREAT PACIFIC IRON WORKS 1978 catalog, with a photo of the Cerro Tore group in Patagonia, & the catalog page for the D.
I'll be happy to send jpegs of these catalog photos to the winning bidder, at their request.  My email will be on your packing list.
Chouinard started manufacturing pitons in Ventura, CA in the mid-1950's. His climbing hardware company became The Great Pacific Ironworks in 1972.
It was the climbing hardware branch of Chouinard's clothing brand Patagonia, then it became Chouinard Equipment again in the early 1980's.   Chouinard sold it to the employees that started BLACK DIAMOND IN 1989.  Chouinard climbing gear then disappeared as a brand name, but Chouinard has retained ownership of Patagonia to the present day.
